Photojournalists Gaining Wide Recognition
Wedding photographers employing a photojournalistic style,
according to USA Today (June 11, 2001), are in such demand that it
is turning traditional "pose-and-say-cheese photographers into paparazzi-for-hire."
Wedding Photography goes photojournalist and mainstream
L. Eric Schryver, an Ohio wedding photojournalist and portrait photographer,
credits wedding photographer Denis Reggie with bringing the style
into mainstream.
Reggie's unique and highly publicized photos of the John F. Kennedy,
Jr.-Carolyn Bessette wedding brought the style to the attention of
millions. Soon Reggie had a waiting list of brides-to-be enthusiastically
willing to meet his reputed $20,000 minimum wedding photography assignment
fee.
Not a newcomer to Photojournalism.
While Schryver has taken professional courses from Denis Reggie, he
has been a practitioner of this photographic style for many years.
Thirty years ago, as an aspiring photographer, he had an opportunity
to participate in a special around-the-world cruise on the University
of Seven Seas. While his classmates shot countless photos of natural
wonders and architectural landmarks, Schryver bought postcards of
these classic photos. . . and invested his time and talent capturing
spontaneous images of people interacting, working, living and recreating.
. . as if he were on assignment for Life Magazine.
The path to becoming a Wedding Photojournalist
Years later, while pursuing his career as a marketing representative
in Dayton, Ohio, wedding photography began as a part-time enterprise.
While his clients requested the obligatory posed shots, Eric always
found opportunities to capture a number of spontaneous images of the
bride, groom, parents and people attending the wedding and reception.
Soon these spontaneous "extra" shots were getting prime placement
in the wedding album. . . and a wedding photographer began his evolution
into a wedding photojournalist
The traveling Wedding Photographer
Most of Schryver's wedding and portrait clients are in his home base
of Dayton and Cincinnati, Ohio. Yet Schryver travels well beyond Ohio
and nearby Indiana and Kentucky. The states of Massachusetts, Vermont,
Michigan, and California have been host to some of his recent wedding
photographer assignments. While shooting on location does entail a
modest increase in costs, Schryver's clients value his experience
in capturing, with a high degree of expertise, those unscripted moments
of the wedding. Schryver's photos are memory images that resonate
with feeling. They instantly re-create the experience of having been
there. . . at that most important moment. Creating images that ignite
feeling is the distinguishing craft of a true wedding photojournalist.
